I recently had a fantastic stay at a traditional Japanese ryokan in Yamagata. The value for money was excellent, with spacious rooms that comfortably accommodated a group of nine. The attention to detail was impressive, from the beautiful shoji doors to the private toilet and bathroom with two sinks. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel like a part of their family. I particularly enjoyed the traditional breakfast, where I had the opportunity to learn about the ryokan's history and even participate in mochi-making. The location was also great, with easy access to nearby temples and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.

No improvements needed, everything was perfect!

Location just walking distance from everything we needed, like Eboshiyamahachimangu. A wide array of restaurants to eat close by, like Sanei that was only 10 minutes' walk away. Free parking was provided.

The hotel is conveniently located near JR Akayu Station, with free shuttle service available. the building is over 350 years old, offering an authentic traditional onsen experience. the onsen includes both indoor and outdoor baths to enjoy, and the multi, course dinner and breakfast feature delicious local dishes, including pork shabu, shabu and hotel.

    Limited non, smoking rooms available.

Great traditional experience with friendly staff. Spacious room for a group. Onsen with outdoor bath carved from a giant rock. Delicious and traditional meals showcasing local ingredients. Informative and interactive breakfast experience with mochi-making. Owner went above and beyond with city tours.

Non-smoking rooms not available. Room was smoky upon arrival.

This hotel exceeded my expectations in so many ways. the attention to detail was remarkable, especially considering the affordable prices. The traditional hot spring experience was truly authentic, with both indoor and outdoor onsen available. Additionally, the hotel's location was convenient, with a free shuttle service provided and a nearby supermarket for any necessities. I also appreciated the personalized service from the staff, particularly the warm welcome from the owner's family and the special mochi-making breakfast experience mentioned in one of the reviews.

No improvements needed, everything was just perfect.

What an amazing stay I had in this traditional Japanese-style hotel. the hospitality shown by the staff was incredible, making the stay super comfortable. the location is perfect, not too far from the station and with great views of the city. the hot springs were amazing, both indoor and outdoor, offering a traditional onsen experience. the food was also something special and had a variety of options. I particularly enjoyed the pork shabu shabu with huge servings of vegetables and the delicious hotel-made mochi served for breakfast.

There were not many negative aspects of this hotel. the only downside was that there was not much to do or see around the hotel, except for some nearby footbaths.

The location of this traditional ryokan is ideal for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The hotel offers a free shuttle service for convenience and the nearby supermarket provides easy access to any essentials. The rooms are spacious, with a large tatami room and private toilet. The onsen is a highlight, especially the outdoor "Rotenburo" carved from a single rock. The friendly staff speaks enough English to make guests feel welcome and the traditional matcha service upon check-in adds a nice touch. The breakfast is a unique experience, with a choice between a communal mochi-making session or a traditional Japanese breakfast.

There are no non-smoking rooms available, which might be a downside for guests sensitive to smoke.

The Takinami Nan'yo is a hidden gem that offers a truly traditional Japanese ryokan experience. The hotel exudes authenticity and charm, with its wooden buildings and indoor onsen pool. The attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the hotel, from the delicious and generous meals to the warm hospitality shown by the owner and staff. The breakfast, featuring hotel-made mochi, is a unique and delightful treat. The location is also convenient, with free shuttles available for guests to explore the surrounding area.

No areas for improvement were found during our stay.

The breakfast was decent with some variety. The staff was also friendly and helpful.

The room was very small and outdated. The bathroom was also not very clean and the amenities provided were of poor quality.
